Heel Spurs
Heel spurs are commonly associated with plantar fasciosis/ fasciitis. Most patients suffering from plantar fasciosis have a heel spur that is visible on an X-ray. Heel spurs are small bony growths extending from the heel bone, or calcaneus. They form in response to stresses placed upon that bone, as calcium is slowly deposited at the site of damage and gradually builds up. Repeated damage due to stress can occur due to being overweight or obese, wearing high heels frequently, or having flat feet that have not been corrected by appropriate footwear and/ or orthoses.
Treatment
It is essential that treatment is commenced as early as possible to gain the best outcomes. Plantar fasciitis can be hard to treat if chronic, so don’t delay in making an appointment with one of our podiatrists. Treatment may consist of the following:
- Strapping
- Ultrasound and heat therapy
- Orthotics, either soft or custom-made using the Computer analysis or Gait scan (linked to them in treatments)
- Stretching and massage
- Extracorporeal / radial shockwave therapy (linked to them in treatments)
- Footwear advice and prescription
